Accountant II/III, Construction & Capital Projects

Job Summary
The Accountant II/III, Construction & Capital Projects performs complex professional accounting functions for construction accounts including accounts receivable, contract accounting, general ledger review, and financial reporting. This role primarily supports construction-related accounts and projects and other institutional financial activities. Ensures accurate and compliant accounting practices and timely completion of work. Computes and prepares data for journal entries, reviews general ledger, and reviews related financial statements.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Reconciles assigned accounts and/or accounting functions. Makes corrections and adjustments to the general ledger.
  • Prepares financial reports, worksheets, entries and accounting summaries to support balances in the annual financial statements and notes thereto.
  • Creates and maintains construction projects and funding sources in Workday; communicates new project setup and funding information to relevant users.
  • Performs the transactional maintenance of construction accounts, including daily review of charges in Workday, annual preparation of budgets for ongoing projects, and completion of monthly appropriation drawdowns and journal entries.
  • Maintains accurate and timely reports. Prepares reports and presents to stakeholders. Analyzes and interprets financial information for planning and control purposes.
  • Prepares property and construction accounting monthly reconciliations. Monitors transactions that are in progress and supports timely closeouts. Identifies, evaluates, and assists in resolving issues, including complex problems.
  • Audits accounting transactions to ensure compliance with FGCU policies, federal and state regulations, and GAAP standards.
  • Utilizes Workday customization features to create and maintain construction accounting processes, including closeouts and projects, for both common and capital books.
  • Responds to customer accounting questions and problems. Researches and analyzes the history of accounting transactions, performs queries, and generates supporting documentation.
  • Performs detailed analyses of accounting activities. Identifies discrepancies and makes recommendations for correction.
  • Recommends policies, procedures and control systems to improve accounting operations.

Required Qualifications for Accountant II, Construction & Capital Projects:
  • This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or closely related field and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.


Required Qualifications for Accountant III, Construction & Capital Projects:
  • This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or closely related field and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) as they related to higher education accounting activities.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Workday or similar enterprise financial management software application.
  • Advanced skill in creating and using spreadsheets and workbooks for data collection and use.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and competing demands are involved.
