Position Description
Contributes to the university's mission through teaching, research and service, some variation by academic unit.

Major/Essential Functions
The qualified candidate will teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses, including but not limited to: Lighting Design, Projection/Media Design, Professional Career Management, and undergraduate introductory coursework. The candidate will demonstrate and implement DEI forward practices through teaching, mentoring, and related activities. The successful candidate will supervise student designers from conception through realization, mentoring individual student design projects in lighting and projection, while maintaining currency with emerging developments in the live entertainment industry in lighting and projection technologies. Mentoring students through the design process for season productions will be a core responsibility. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute and collaborate on matters pertaining to School curriculum, policy, and practice, as well as remain active in their field through adjacent scholarly/creative and service activities. The successful candidate will effectively mentor students across areas of research, process, and technique, and participate in the schools formal advising process for undergraduate and graduate students.

Candidates who have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University are encouraged to apply. Service duties include program-building, as well as commitment to extra-curricular activities. Service to the department, college, university, and community is expected.


Required Qualifications
An MFA or terminal degree in theatre or related area. Demonstrated record of effectiveness as a teacher, a record of peer-reviewed publication and/or peer-reviewed creative activity which has contributed to the discipline or field of study, to the candidates intellectual and artistic development, and to the quality of the academic enterprise; a record of professional service appropriate to the discipline; promise of growth in teaching and research or artistic and creative activity.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years teaching in higher education
  • Two or more years of professional design experience in live entertainment
  • Demonstrated and ongoing commitment to equitable, inclusive, and antiracist pedagogy that serves diverse student populations
  • Ability to teach courses in lighting design and projection/media design
  • Familiarity with current practices in design for live entertainment
  • Demonstrated ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally
  • Experience in both Theatre and Dance lighting and/or projection design
  • Evidence of affiliation to professional organizations (e.g.: Union, USITT, international, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety codes and practices, and of current trends in lighting technology and professional standards, affirmed by certifying bodies within the industry
  • Additional expertise in a related field (e.g.: production electrician, console programming, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and use live entertainment technologies/applications (e.g.: Vectorworks, Lightwright, Adobe Suite, ETC EOS consoles, etc.)
  • Clear ideas for impactful future research and/or creative activity goals
  • A clear potential to support scholarship by extramural funding, as appropriate to research specialization
