Assistant Project Scientist position in the Neuroscience Research Institute
Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2021
Salary: Based on UCSB Project Scientist series salary table

Position Description:
A position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Craig Montell to conduct research on the molecular and neural mechanisms underlying olfactory behavior in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The appointee will generate mutant and transgenic flies using CRISPR/Cas9 and apply behavioral assays to reveal the roles of ion channels and receptors important for sensory physiology. The applicant will also perform electrophysiology on flies. The appointee will be expected to make significant conceptual contributions to the project.

Basic qualifications: A doctorate degree in Physiology or related field is required, along with a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral experience in performing behavior, molecular genetics and electrophysiology on Drosophila.

Preferred qualifications: A very solid research and publication record at the pre- and post-doctoral level. The ideal candidate will have experience in devising behavior assays, molecular genetics, electrophysiology on Drosophila, and patch clamp recordings of cation channels.

Initial appointments are for one year, full time with benefits. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and availability of funding.
