POSITION DESCRIPTION
A one-year position (with the possibility of extension) as an Assistant Project Scientist is available in the Earth Research Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in a research project led by Professor Anna Trugman. We seek to hire a candidate with interests in land-atmosphere interactions, the terrestrial carbon cycle, and ecological numerical modeling - including model optimization and data assimilation. The candidate will lead a research project into the mismatch between modeled optimal plant hydraulic traits and observed traits from field campaigns. Mismatches between observed and modeled plant hydraulic traits will be further characterized through adding additional model processes and performing sensitivity experiments. This position will work across disciplines and with an interdisciplinary team that includes both modeling and field work, with whom coordination is required.
Work will be carried out under the supervision of lead PI Dr. Anna Trugman (http://trugmanlab.geog.ucsb.edu/, Department of Geography, University of California Santa Barbara). This project is part of a larger proposal for understanding how ecosystem functional trait assemblages mediate whole-ecosystem vulnerability to climate extremes, particularly severe drought.
In addition to this work, the candidate is expected to co-create new projects with Professor Anna Trugman in the area of the terrestrial carbon cycle, climate carbon feedbacks, plant hydraulics and global ecology.
This position will be based in the Trugman Lab on the UC Santa Barbara campus and may include field work across the Western United States.
This is a full-time position with Dr. Anna Trugman. Competitive salary and benefits commensurate on experience. The anticipated start date will be February 1, 2023. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.
